Predator control

New Zealand was once free of land based mammals (except for bats) and as a consequence birds and insects took over the ecological niche usually filled by mammals. With time, native fauna also lost required responses to deal with mammals threats.

Maori and European settlers intoduced the 33 mammal species that are now found in New Zealand, since the arrival of these mammals New Zealand has sadly lost over fifty species of native birds to extinction.

Our pedator control programme targets mustelids (ferrets, stoats and weasels), feral cats, rodents, rabbits and possums and is an important part of our ongoing commitment to protect and restore these precious wetlands. For these reason, a range of traps are set around Sinclair Wetlands.
